Absolute Black Oval Chain Rings
June 5, 2017, 12:00 am

First off, they're not BioPace. Riders from the 90s might remember cycling's first move to ovalized chainrings from Shimano. The idea was solid, but the thought process got turned the wrong way, in a sense; modern rings utilize their ovality to make the most of the ideal, powerful part of the pedal stroke, while BioPace wasn't clocked correctly, nor did it have an ideal degree of ovality.

The other knock on BioPace was how the rings shifted. The ramps and pins didn't do anough to allow for the changes to the rings, and shifting suffered. Modern rings adress both of these issues, one directly and one by default. Brands like Absolute Black offer different degrees of ovality based on application and tooth count, so that a 32t MTB ring is vastly different from a 50t road ring. The shifting issue is essentially solved in the mountain bike world, where the majority of brands and riders have gone exclusively to 1x drivetrains, where narrow-wide rings like Absolute Black eliminate front shifting (and dropped chains) altogether.

We're big fans of the technology, and we stock options from Wolf Tooth Components and Absolute Black to make sure we hae the right option for you and your drivetrain. Let us know what crank you have and we can point you to the right mount, including the correct BCD or offset.

Choosing the right size ring can also be a little tricky, but there are plenty of ways to nail it down. First, look at your current bike. If you spend most of your time in the big ring, you're probably pretty close. For most riders on a 36t, dropping to a 32t or a 34t is a great place to start, with a 32t if you're sticking with a 10 speed cassette and a 34t to take advantage of a 10 or 11-42 cassette out back on an 11 speed.

Of course, we're lucky to have Nate, Steve and Jeff to help point you in the right direction and help you get the right ring for your bike and riding style.
