Another Year, Another Unforgettable Iceman Cometh
November 5, 2018, 12:00 am

There’s really nothing like a day in the woods with 5,000 of your closest friends. Every single year, we leave Timber Ridge amazed that we get to enjoy the Iceman Cometh Challenge right here in Traverse City. As lucky as we are that thousands of riders flock to join us every November, we never take it for granted that we get to ride these trails and enjoy this race right in our backyard.

This year was a pretty perfect balance of cold weather but dry conditions. While some may have had just a moment’s worry when a light sleet and a few snowflakes began to all on the way to Kalkaska early Saturday morning, everything blew over quickly. Even some rain overnight only helped make the fast course even faster, packing in nicely after the first few waves and leaving a long dirt highway all the way to the finish line.

We had nearly the whole team in action again this year, plus dozens of our friends, customers, and folks in from out of town that we see at all the races. While we’re certainly going all-out on the course, it’s always a treat to be able to relive the action afterward, no matter who wins. That’s the biggest reason Iceman has earned its legendary status; the conditions, the trail, and the people who race it add to its legend every year, and we all leave armed with stories about the event that hold us over until next year.

For a lot of us, Iceman is the final race of the season. If you started training or racing way back in March or April for Barry-Roubaix, it’s been a long nine months, but a great year of riding and making the most of what shaped up to be a nice spring, perfect summer, and a rainy but enjoyable fall. Whether you’re hanging your rig up for the season or gearing up to fit just a few more rides in, stop in and make sure your bike is in great shape. It’s never a good idea to put your bike away without a thorough running-through, and with short days and cold rides, you never want to find out what’s wrong with your bike at the furthest point away from your car.

We’re getting ready for fat bike season, as well as building up a fresh shipment of fitness equipment that will help folks stay fit and stay indoors as the weather starts to turn. With a number of great events like Cranksgiving, Turkey Trot, and the Farmland 5km all coming up in the next few weeks, it might be a good time to change things up and try something new!

Make sure you check out the full results from the 29th Annual Iceman Cometh Challenge right here and come to CBS to get ready for next season....right now!

It’s winter! Here in Traverse City, that doesn’t mean we’re stuck inside for seven months. Thanks to the hard work of Northern Michigan Mountain Bike Association and TART, we have some world-class trails right in our backyard to make it fun to get outside no matter how much snow we get. In fact, the more snow, the better!
