This Friday, you’ve got a chance to support the Northern Michigan Mountain Bike Association just by riding bikes and drinking beer. Yes, you should read on.

For the second year, Brew is hosting the Urban Friday Night Lights, inviting fat bike riders to take their FNL ride into town while hunters are still in the woods. Expect a fun, casual ride from Front Street to the Commons for a few laps of a modified Conquer the Village loop. Seeing those trails and those buildings by the flickering glow of a headlight is really fun, and it’s a perfect way to see if night riding is your thing.

During these short days, riding at night is often the only way many of us can squeeze in midweek bike-time, and having the right lights can make all the difference. Using a headlight that mounts to your handlebar or helmet, we’ve found that a lumen output of 350 is the best place to start and still be safe. The more snow, the more light will reflect up and illuminate the trail, but the more lumens you have, the better. It will also allow you to run your light at a slightly lower level, saving battery life to make sure you make it home.

The more lumens, the more light, but there are other perfect as well. Some lights, like the Serfas TSL-1200, have an external battery pack that also boasts a USB port. This allows you to not only run a bright headlight but also charge your phone or GPS unit on longer rides or when you travel. In winter, we use these on our fat bikes, but in summer, the battery pack is one of the first things we put in our bags so we can charge phones before or after races for the car ride home.

Make sure you’ve got your headlight picked out before the Urban Friday Night Lights Ride leaves Brew at 5:30 pm this Friday, November 23. The plan is to ride for 60-75 minutes behind the State Hospital before heading back to Brew. 100% of proceeds from all Short’s Brewing sales will go to support Northern Michigan Mountain Bike Association! You’ll also be able to pick up your winter grooming badges, check out some sweet NMMBA gear, and learn more about grooming efforts at Glacial Hills, Cadillac Pathway, Leelanau State Park, as well as the Winter Sports Trail right here in Traverse City.

If you have your grooming badge, remember, you can get your Timber Ridge Parking Pass for just $25, just show it to Ella or Miranda the next time you’re at Timber. With a long winter on the horizon, you’re going to want to have a nice place to change, relax, and crack a Short’s after a fun fat bike ride!

We’ve got 2019 fat bikes on the floor from Scott, REID, and Borealis, as well as 45NRTH tires to get you just the right grip and feel on variable snow conditions!
