Gearing Up For The Traverse City Trails Festival
July 10, 2017, 12:00 am

Traverse City's local trail stewards, Northern Michigan Mountain Bike Association, is putting on a new race this summer, and it's coming up quick! On July 22, mountain bikers of all abilities will be given a chance to ride 40 or 25 mile routes of the normally unmarked trails. There's really no better way to learn the network of connecting trails than with your friends at this new event.

One of the very cool ideas is to offer both races and tours to appeal to more riders. Even if you don't want to compete, you can still head out and enjoy the marked course, the well-stocked aid stations, and a beautiful day in the woods. The tour option is available for both the long 40 mile route and the 25 mile, which does offer a shortcut to a beginner-friendly 15 miles.

Both of these routes are almost entirely singletrack, which means it's a very different course than some of the other area's bigger races. With no big, wide two-tracks, there's no place to just put out the power; it takes a steady, smooth bike handler to really excel. We also think it's a course that benefits riders on full suspension bikes, like the Scott Spark RC. Fast is smooth, and smooth is fast, and that's never more important than in tight and technical singletrack, where every bump and root steals momentum and taxes your legs.

The event takes place at Ranch Rudolf, with cabins and camping available to make it an unforgettable weekend in Traverse City. Afterwards, everyone will enjoy Short's Brewing Co.'s finest beer and cheer on the sport's future stars with an 8 mile kid's race.

You can find out more about the event, or head over to registration and get signed up for an incredibly fun day in the woods! It's NMMBA's biggest fundraiser of the year, and the best way to support the people who support and maintain our trails.
