Fresh Rubber Part Duh: Schwalbe Thunder Burts
September 25, 2017, 12:00 am

We realized there are plenty of mountain bikers licking their chops at the prospect of cooler temperatures and a slew of fall races and rides. Autumn is coming, and as your October and November campaigns kick off, we've got one of the most popular tires of the season in stock.

The Schwalbe Thunder Burt is tailor-made to the fast, wide-open trails that make up two of Northern Michigan's biggest fall races. The Peak2Peak Mountain Bike Classic and the Iceman Cometh Challenge are both largely drag races, using more two-track and gravel road than tight singletrack. Big knobs are necessary, especially if the weather has been dry in the weeks or days leading up to the race. Enter the Thunder Burt, a mountain bike tire that offers minimal rolling resistance with just enough bite to let you ride with some confidence in the biggest races of the year.

With that minimal knob comes some massive benefits in weight as well. The race-ready Evolution version is just 435 grams in the Liteskin 29er size, and even the SnakeSkin is a svelte 515g!

Lots of local riders use either a Thunder Burt front and rear, or put on a knobbier tire up front. The Schwalbe Rocket Ron is a great option due to it's widely-spaced but considerable knob, offering plenty of bite for loose corners or in the rare pockets of wet black soil near the Betsie River Valley on Peak2Peak, or the opening 3 miles of singletrack on the Iceman. It's very much a matter of personal preference and riding style, and if there's a front tire you prefer, there's no issue with just sticking with it. Tapping into a Burt out back, though, is a great idea.

What's your favorite Peak2Peak or Iceman set-up?

We have Burts, Rons, and plenty of options from Schwalbe and Continental in stock and ready to get tossed onto your rig.
