Spring Is Around The Corner: Rides To Look Forward To
April 16, 2018, 12:00 am

This winter has been absolutely brutal, with over a foot of snow this past weekend even as we round the middle of April and head toward May. Don't worry; the weather is in the 40s all next week, and there are some great events coming up to kick off the month!

Believe it or not, you will want to have your bike ready to roll by the weekend. We are finally about to turn the corner from winter until spring, and with some good weather bridging us into May, you're going to want to have your bike dialed in! Let's hope these are your last few days on the trainer, and that you can make it out to these great Traverse City events.

It's always the real start of the season. Mud, Sweat and Beers is May 5 here in Traverse City, and it's a race that brings the whole cycling community together. Both races are full, but there is always the chance of picking up a transfer entry, volunteering, or just stopping by to watch all the action at Mt. Holiday. Last year, TC's own Jeff Owens took the win on his Scott Scale, and he's hoping to keep the win local in 2018. The event sees 800 racers of all abilities challenge themselves and kick off the spring with a fun, fast event that uses big sections of the Vasa Pathways and new sections of singletrack as well.

Just the next day, swap out your mountain bike for some skinny tires. The spring edition of the Pumpkin Pedal leaves Jolly Pumpkin for your choice of a 20 or 40-mile ride on beautiful Old Mission Peninsula. The event is totally donation-based, with the money raised going to support TART Trails. You can always find out more about the ride here

Some of the best racing is fake-racing. On Thursday, May 10, the summer-long Speed of Light season kicks off with the first 'race' of the year. Always free, always fun, SOL is a 12-mile lap of the Vasa 25km with a different competition every week, month-long Grand Tours, and prizes! miniSOL, for kids under 16 years of old, kicks off at the end of May, when school is over and the kids can stay up a little later. SOL is every Thursday at 6:30 pm from May into mid-September. You can get all the SOL updates at kolotc.co

What rides are you looking forward to this spring? Make sure you stop by for your repairs, snacks, and fresh gear so you're ready to roll when the weather gets nice!
