Get A Better Grip: ESI RCT Wrap
July 3, 2017, 12:00 am

ESI has brought over their silicone materials to drop bars, and we've been putting the bar wrap through the paces.

By and large, bar tape is bar tape, but there are a few niggling things that drive us nuts. First, having clean bar tape is a sign that you actually take care of your bike, and the RCT is quick and easy to wipe down. It's not porous, so it doesn't absorb sweat and gunk, but isn't slippery like some other synthetic tapes. Second, it's stretchy, which makes it easy to customize how much cushion you've got from road vibrations. The closer you wrap, the thicker; the wider, the thinner the wrap and skinnier the feel.

The feel of the tape is a very personal preference. Some riders like more cushion to help keep you fresh from road vibration. Big miles, gravel, or generally rough roads can add a lot of bumps and jostling, and that vibration reduction really adds. Many cyclocross racers or crit riders actually prefer very little cushion, which helps to give you a better 'feel' of what the bike and road are doing underneath you. I'd rather have very thin tape for my cyclocross bike, but really like the effects of thick tape on my road bike, especially the one I ride for long gravel races like Barry-Roubaix (62 miles) and the Lowell 50 (57 miles).

The other cool feature is that the tape is dual-sided by default. If your tape is finally looking a bit weathered, you can just remove the tape, flip it, and put it back on!

We've got more ESI grips in stock in a number of colors,
